An important part of successful interior design is to start by analyzing the use of the space, and this charming Cape Cod style cottage in the Glen Park neighborhood of San Francisco is a perfect example. The owners were dreaming of a front room for relaxing and socializing, a cozy dining area, and a designated place to store shoes and jackets.
Out of respect for the house’s architecture, we made a custom shoe bench for the entry in a style that’s more traditional than what we usually design, just so it could blend in with the existing architectural details. And thanks to the custom work we were able to utilize every inch available. For the living room and the dining room, we went with a mix of modern and traditional with a rustic edge and natural materials, such as solid wood and Italian marble.
Before the renovation, the front room was a dark area that everybody walked right through on their way to the kitchen. Now, it’s the new favorite spot for weekend breakfasts, to hang out with friends, and to relax with some music.
